Government
Build a coalition with like-minded parties and lead a majority or a minority government. Be ready to compromise on your programme and share out key ministries, or face confidence votes.
The game
Pick your party and steer its ideologies in the direction you want, build coalitions, manage its internal currents and shape the nation in government or in opposition. Fight other parties for supremacy, win the support of different social classes, cultures and religions, build your nation's economy and realize your vision.
Deal with different nations and situations: lead a liberal party in a republic newly out of dictatorship, with massive debt and corruption to fix; a new populist party challenging the status quo in a stagnant nation; the leading party of a fractured coalition, whose regional partners want more autonomy in exchange for their votes; or the governing party of a major oil exporter, whose budget swings with world prices. Each scenario calls for a different approach, and if you want to break with your own party line, you may need to keep your enemies close.
Chase your party's objectives in Challenge Mode, or lead the nation wherever you want in Free Play. But beware: crises, coups and bankruptcy can bring the state down, and your own party can crumble under the weight of its currents and fade from memory.

Draft bills that reshape your nation across many areas at once, or amend other parties' bills in exchange for your support. Negotiation is the key to steering the country where you want it to go.
03 / 10
Win over the voters with your campaign programme. Keep your pledges, or change course to win the support of interest groups that can fund your next campaign. Spend your party's money on campaigns that sway voters, raise the issues you own or attack a rival, at the risk of a backlash. And rewrite the rules: change the electoral system or raise the threshold to keep small parties out of parliament.

New parties are born as you play. Every month the game looks for voters no party speaks for, and enough of them become a movement with its own name, logo and leader; win seats and it is a party. Factions split away, and parties that fall short merge or fight on outside parliament.

Run an economy of real production chains: iron ore and coal become steel, steel becomes machinery and vehicles, and every factory needs power, freight, finance and IT to keep running. When a link breaks, a shortage of oil or a power cut, it ripples down the line, and prices follow the whims of the world market. Nationalize or privatize whole sectors: run the economy yourself, or take a laissez-faire approach and let the market decide.

Dozens of laws across every ministry, from income tax and the minimum wage to drug policy and the size of the army. In the advanced Country Overview visualization, you can immediately see how your actions impact your nation and how far your choices reach, giving you real control over their effects. Each moves the nation's stats, from the budget and GDP to crime, health and happiness.

Opposing ideologies pull voters, from conservative against progressive to capitalist against socialist and unitarist against federalist, each splitting the nation into two sides and the undecided. Laws and the state of the nation shift opinion day by day, and voters choose by the issues they care about most. Your campaigns and macroeconomics can sway them, or change what they care about.

From students and pensioners to industrial workers and business owners, each social class votes its own way. As the economy changes and the nation ages, the classes grow and shrink, and the richer a class gets, the harder it pulls public opinion its way.

Religions, cultures and interest groups each want something from the laws: more teachers, autonomy for their region, faith schools or same-sex unions. Take up their causes and deliver, and they lend your party their members' votes and fund your campaigns; promise and fail them, and they turn on you. Ignore them for too long and they take to the streets, from teachers' strikes and farmers' blockades to separatist protests.

Crises and booms grow out of the nation you run. Let debt pile up and a debt crisis follows; neglect the cities and riots break out; underfund the grid and the blackouts start. Get it right and you may host a tourism boom or become a financial centre. Then the world takes its turn: recessions, financial crashes, trade wars and oil shocks strike without warning, and natural disasters, epidemics and border tensions test how ready your nation really is.
